SARCOMA BOTRYOIDES......

This is a special type of mixed  Mesodermal tumour commonly arising from the cervix and rarely from vagina or the uterus. It is also Knows as Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma and usually occur in childhood up to the age of 5-8 years , but can occur in adults also.
Vaginal Rhabdomyosarcoma in young girls are usually referred as grape like Sarcomas., usually they are symptom less masses.Main Symptoms if any are due to Metatastic changes, otherwise blood stained watery discharge, Anaemia , and cachexia are only the presenting one.
Only Vaginal examination reveals pinkish, grape like polypoidal soft growth arising from the cervix. Hysto pathology shows undifferentiated mesodermal and striated muscle fibres.    The growth spreads by direct extension to other organs and via the blood stream to produce secondaries specially in lungs. The degree of malignancy varies but is usually high.
The typical sarcoma Botryoids seen in children is most often fatal, irresepective of treatment. Intravenous administration of Vincristine , actynomycin-D and Cyclophosphamide can be tried, after calculating the dose by surface area and body mass area of the patient.
The result of radical surgery are very poor., hence because of local re occurence and distant metastasis , the prognosis is very poor.
